Why we do not quote over the phone

Any number given before someone has looked at your tree is a guess, and guesses in this trade go one of two ways. Either the price is low and gets revised upward once the crew sees the job, which is how homeowners end up in arguments on the day. Or it is padded to cover the unknown, and you overpay.

We look at the tree, then put a fixed price in writing. What follows is what we are actually assessing when we do.

Size, and specifically wood volume

Height gets all the attention and it is the wrong measure. What matters is how much wood there is, and volume scales roughly with the cube of trunk diameter. A tree with twice the trunk diameter of another has something like eight times the wood in it, not twice.

This is why a mature plains cottonwood costs several times what a similar-height ornamental does. It is also why two trees that look comparable from the street can be priced very differently.

Access

Probably the biggest single variable after size, and the one homeowners least expect.

A tree a truck and chipper can park next to is straightforward. The same tree behind a 36-inch gate, with every piece carried by hand through a side yard, can take twice as long. Back yards with no vehicle access, steep or soft ground, or a fence panel that has to come out and go back all move the number.

What is underneath

Open lawn means the tree can be felled or dropped in large sections. That is fast.

A roof, a fence, a hot tub, a neighbour's shed or a set of service lines means every piece has to be rigged and lowered under control. That is slow, it needs more crew, and on very tight sites it needs a crane.

Condition of the tree

A dead tree costs more than a live one of the same size, which surprises people who assume dead means easier.

A climber can trust sound wood. On a dead tree nothing is certain, and limbs that would hold three people on a healthy maple can snap under one. That frequently pushes the job to an aerial lift or a crane instead of climbing. Ash killed by emerald ash borer is the extreme case — it goes brittle faster than most hardwood and is genuinely hazardous to climb.

The practical implication: removing a dying tree early is cheaper than removing the same tree three years later.

Disposal

Wood and brush have to go somewhere. Ash removed inside Colorado's quarantine area has restrictions on where material can be taken, which affects the route and the cost. If you want logs cut to firewood length and stacked instead of hauled, that changes things too — usually in your favour.

Stump grinding

What should be included

Any quote you accept should cover taking the tree down, cutting and hauling the wood, dragging and chipping the brush, and raking the site. If a price looks unusually low, check what is missing from that list — cleanup is the usual answer.

Questions we get about this

Why will you not give me a price over the phone?

Because it would be wrong. Size, access, what sits underneath the tree, and its condition all move the number substantially, and none of them can be assessed over a phone call. We look at it and put a fixed price in writing.

Why is my dead tree more expensive than my neighbour's live one?

Dead wood cannot be trusted under a climber's weight, so the job often needs an aerial lift or crane rather than climbing, and has to be rigged in smaller sections. Dead ash is the worst case because it goes brittle very quickly.

Is stump grinding included?

No, it is quoted separately, because not everyone wants it. If you do want it, say so at the estimate and it goes in the same written quote.

Does it cost less if I keep the wood?

Sometimes. If you want rounds cut to firewood length and left on site rather than hauled, that saves disposal. Ash cannot leave the quarantine area regardless.

What makes one quote much cheaper than another?

Usually cleanup, insurance, or licensing. Ask what the price includes, ask for the City of Greeley license number, and ask for a certificate of insurance. If any of the three is missing, that is where the difference is.
