When a tree needs to come out
Not every ugly tree needs removing, and a contractor who tells you otherwise on a first visit is selling rather than diagnosing. There are, though, a handful of situations where removal is the honest answer in Greeley:
- The tree is already dead. A dead tree does not fall on a schedule. It sheds limbs, then fails at the trunk, and the wood gets more brittle and more dangerous to climb every season it stands.
- More than half the crown is gone. Ash losing its top to emerald ash borer, or a maple that lost a leader in a spring storm, is often past the point where pruning restores a sound structure.

How we take a tree down
Most Greeley lots do not have room to fell a large tree in one piece. In practice that means climbing it or working from an aerial lift and taking it apart from the top, rigging each section on ropes and lowering it under control rather than dropping it.

Stump grinding is quoted separately because some people want the stump gone and some do not.
Licensing, and why it matters here
Greeley is stricter than most Colorado cities. The City requires any company offering tree trimming or removal on woody plants over 10 feet in height to hold a City of Greeley tree service license, and it maintains a public list of licensed contractors. Work in the public right of way requires an additional Public Space Arborist endorsement.

- Condition. A dead, brittle tree is more dangerous to climb than a live one and takes longer to dismantle safely.
- Disposal. Ash removed under quarantine rules has restrictions on where the wood can go.

Questions we get about this
Do you remove trees close to the house?
Yes, and it is most of what we do. Trees within a few feet of a structure get climbed and dismantled from the top, with each section rigged on ropes and lowered under control rather than dropped.
What happens to the wood?
It is hauled off as part of the job unless you want it left. If you burn, we can cut rounds to length and stack them. Ash removed under quarantine restrictions has limits on where the wood can be moved, and we handle that.
Do you grind the stump too?
We can, and it is quoted separately. Grinding takes the stump six to twelve inches below grade so the area can be sodded or replanted.
How soon can you come out?
Estimates usually within a couple of days. Scheduled removals typically run one to three weeks out depending on season. Hazardous trees and storm damage get moved to the front of the queue.
Is my tree actually dead, or just stressed?
Worth having someone look before you commit to removal. Scratch a small twig with a thumbnail; green underneath means live tissue. A tree that leafs out late or thin may be recoverable. That is what an arborist consultation is for.
